Joining in on Ginny's Yarn Along today...
Someone in our house is 17 today! And of course... I am still knitting a birthday present. Mainly because the birthday girl, who is very picky precise (wonder where she gets that from?), decided (finally) on her gifts just last week. In fact, the knitted gift is something that she chose later in the week. She likes wearing headbands rather than hats right now so her hair is not messed up. After searching Ravelry, she chose Julia's Cabled Headband. Okay. Okay. Still okay...even if I've never attempted cables before. (No time for learning like the present!) She chose Lark yarn from Quince & Co. in Frost. Such a subtle pale grey, almost white, but not quite. It'll look lovely with her dark hair.
The yarn arrived on Monday afternoon, and this is what her headband looked like Tuesday afternoon. I hope to finish it, wrap it up and present it to her this evening. Cables are really not that hard after all. Note to self: buy a better cable needle.
Reading? Same as last week. It's interesting if a tad dry as biographies go... would love to eventually visit that countryside. I'm sure it's breathtaking.
I did however manage to make her favorite cake in time: Frosted Orange Layer Cake from Moosewood Restaurant Book of Desserts. She's requested this cake for several years running now. It is delicious! As a good birthday cake should be. With a pound of 'butta' for the cake and the frosting combined (plus, I doubled the frosting), it is definitely a once-a-year favorite. Maybe twice a year.

You are inspiring! The headband will be gorgeous and snowy!
My six year-old caught a glimpse of that cake and squeeled, "Birthday cake!" and, in French, "how old is she?" When I said seventeen, she said "Ou la la!" :-)

You're a good mama! That cake looks wonderful. And a big pat on the back for mastering that cable. I think that's very impressive progress in a really short period.

I can't get the hang of cables at all, and avoid them at all costs, so I applaud you. LOVELY looking cake!

Spalva - oui, dix-sept ans! Et je me sens vieux. (if my French is correct - not sure)

I have to go look up that pattern, it looks beautiful! And the cake sounds yummy - just what a birthday cake should be for sure :)

Wow, I love that cable pattern - well done! The yarn is beautiful. I'm a bit in love with Quince & Co. Happy 17 to your girl. Now I'm hungry. x

Oh Happy Birthday! Seventeem is my most favorite age. The cake, oh my, I am all about butta and extra frosting.
Thanks so much for posting the link to the headband. My daughter has requested one for Christmas and while I have never attempted cables, I am going to take your word for it that they aren't hard. xx

I loved the revelation I had when I first tried cables - not nearly as hard as they look ;)
Love the pattern and yarn she chose, beautiful combination :)
